چکیده

Gamma-ray emission from AGN provides us with unprecedented insights into the physics of extragalactic jets. The emission from these jets fits naturally into the existing theoretical framework of relativistic jets as inferred from parsec scale and kiloparsec scale observations. Models of the γ-ray fluxes give us important knowledge of jet parameters, in particular magnetic fields and the size of the emitting region. For example, in the case of Markarian 501, the jet plasma is subequipartiion and the energy flux is particle dominated. Discussion of the physics of jets on the subparsec scale leads naturally to questions of jet composition. The dynamics of jets are consistent with conventional electron-proton composition if the minimum Lorentz factors, γmin > 100. Jets can be electron-positron if γmin ≈ 100.

A Search for VHE Gamma Rays from AGNs Visible from the Southern Hemisphere

Observations have been made, using the University of Durham Mark 6 gamma ray telescope, of the very high energy gamma ray emission from a number of active galactic nuclei visible from the Southern hemisphere. Limits are presented to the VHE both for steady long-term emission and for outbursts of emission on timescales of 1 day. A) — galaxies: active — gamma rays: observations

A test on external Compton models for γ-ray active galactic nuclei

There is clear evidence that the γ-ray emission from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is attributed to the inverse Compton scatterings in the relativistic blobs near the massive black holes. If the soft seed photons are from the regions outside the blobs, a linear relation between (νFν,γ/νFν,synu ) and Doppler factor δ is expected, where νFν,γ and νFν,syn are monochromatic γ-ray and synchrotron fl...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

Active Galactic Nuclei as High Energy Engines

Active Galactic Nuclei are considered as possible sites of cosmic ray acceleration and some of them have been observed as high energy gamma ray emitters (Blazars). There naturally comes an appealing idea that the acceleration of the highest energy cosmic rays in the AGNs has a signature in the form of gamma ray emission and high energy neutrino emission through the collisions of very high energ...

Black hole masses and Doppler factors of γ - ray active galactic nuclei

The sizes of the broad-line regions (BLRs) in γ-ray active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are estimated from their optical continuum luminosity by using the empirical relation between RBLR and Lλ,opt. Using the broad emission line data, we derive the photon energy density in the relativistic blobs near the massive black holes in AGNs. We calculate the power of the broad-line photons Compton up-scattere...
